  1. Underrated Anime Series: Series that you thought didn't get enough credit

This thread is to post about anime you thought went unappreciated and should have been rated better than they were or just something you enjoyed but wasn't rated highly by other people. Also do tell why you thought it was good and why you enjoyed it.
    Thank you.

    I'll go first,

For me the most under rated anime of this season is Asobi Asobase.

I love comedy anime and didn't expect this to be as good as Grand Blue and it already topped Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro for me.
The Best part about Asobi Asobase is the voice acting and animation apart from the actual comedy and its phenomenal. My advice to the people who haven't watched it is to just go and watch it without any prior knowledge and looking at reviews, it's good.

Do tell which anime you thought was under rated or anything that exceeded your expectations this summer.

How is this under rated? People keeps posting about this anime on my Timeline. Appreciate the comedy tho.

Also I think it's better if you post a specific thread for this anime but oh well whatever.

@Lieutenant Glad to see people are actually watching it. Some facebook groups and discord group I was in people just avoided it calling it a cute girls doing cute stuff kind of anime without even watching the PV for it so I thought it's getting under appreciate.

Can't say I agree with it being underrated. Then again, I didn't like the first episodes and dropped it. Heck, it's got a better average score on MAL right now than Hanebado!, Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight or Hataraku Saibou.

Harukana Receive and Happy Sugar Life, meanwhile, actually are underrated.

    Also

    lol Facebook

@DarkChaplain Yea my friend added me in a group it's basically about csgo but they do talk about random stuff and nobody wanted to give Asobi Asobase a try.

Haven't watched Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight so I dont't know how good it is. Hataraku Saibou is great but Asobi Asobase got better comedy so maybe that's why, they are close in ratings though. Hanebado! deserves a low score because it's just not good enough too much drama for a sports anime which is over the top.

Harukana Receive can be called under rated because everyone is like, beach volleyball so ecchi I mean what did you expect it's beach volleyball. But as a sports anime it's good. I think Banana Fish goes through the same treatment because it's yaoi a lil bit.

Happy sugar life must have got a lot of publicity because of Hanazawa Kana but still it's not that good anyways.

    it's basically about csgo

    My heartfelt condolences.

But eh, after seeing Hinamatsuri earlier this year, I don't think Asobi Asobase can score much in terms of comedy with me. Neither did Chio-chan. I honestly ain't into that type of comedy on display.

Hanebado! deserving a low score I take issue with. The drama is the point. The character drama is in the foreground, the sport itself is the backdrop in which developments happen. This isn't your regular crappy sports anime about winning tournament after tournament, but about the mental states of the players more than anything. It's about exploring trauma in various ways (Aragaki with her height, Riko with her lack of belief in her own capabilities, Elena with her lack of passion and observer situation, Connie with her abandonment issues, and Hanesaki with her mother issues, obsessive/destructive approach to the sport and what not). It may seem "over the top" to an outsider, but frankly, a lot of it exists in most such clubs and tournament environments. Hanebado! just amplifies it enough to make it worth talking about to an audience.

If all you're watching it for is bland sports crap with super powered players who enter the zone every other episode and matches lasting multiple episodes in the same way DBZ had planets on a 5 minute countdown to destruction for 10 episodes, then sure, you'll be disappointed. However, you'd be very shallowly looking at it and missing the bigger picture. That's a failure of the viewership, not the series itself.

As for Harukana Receive, the "Ecchi" tag is pretty much misapplied. Sure, it has chicks on a beach playing volleyball, which comes with swimsuits, butt shots and the likes, and there are a few jokey bits about slapping butts or having to go shopping for new clothes that do the job better while in heavy motion, but it's really not "Ecchi" in the sense that most other shows of that type are. There isn't even a male protagonist to fantasize about the girls in this one. I've seen enough Ecchi shows to know this isn't one of those.

@DarkChaplain Isn't it spoilers talking about Hanebado like this?

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT

So don't forget that it is a sports anime at the end of the day and the sport should be the main focus rather than really unrealistic drama in it. I don't like the fact that Ayano can open some beast mode out of no where just for the plot. They bring up her traumatizing background boom she turns super saiyan level OP and rekts everyone.

That's such a weak plot, I don't want a super op character in a sports anime, but the overall fact that having a traumatizing past and abandoning her mother gave her god like skills. She couldn't 1v2 Connie before but after abandoning her mother she just destroyed Connie in a 1v1 that's so unrealistic and dumb it also makes story linear and predictable. You might say it's an anime 'who cares about realism' but if you make a sports anime it should have some realistic values other than some pointless drama.

Example of this is Haikyuu, the sports anime done right, Karasuno wasn't invincible neither was anyone in their team, heck Shiratorizawa was op as hell but they still controlled it with Karasuno winning in the end, they controlled the drama properly and was realistic to the sports all the way that was atleast realistic. They had a character which they developed properly, Hinata was short but had a massive jump that was his strong point but overall he was meh but they developed the character getting good over time they showed how he got goog how you get good in sports not like showed some traumatizing past and then he just break blocks everywhere as it happened with Ayano who just go cold eye and butchers Connie, even though she destroyed Ayano 1v2 before. That character development is not pleasant at all.

Hanebado for me falls flat, the entire concept of drama changing Ayano's personality grinds my gear BUT BUT BUT BUT I still watch it I enjoy it cus I enjoy Badminton, but it's still a 7/10 for me drama is not the problem the way they used it is the actual problem.

I mean this is not really a topic about bashing on each other and I get what you mean about the characters as they show various traumas but Ayano is not done well. I never really said I wanted a super powered op character and long ass battles so you can't really bring that up and btw I was mocking people who says Harukana Receive is just an Ecchi anime......I like that anime cus it's a good sports anime and it's not at all bad garbage ecchi shit.

Hanebado isn't over yet, I'm sure she'll find someone that can bury her. But I feel like the main focus in the upcoming few episodes will be

!! SPOILER !! Her friends trying to teach her that winning isn't everything and she should stop being an apathetic dickface and have fun. / !! SPOLER !!

But yeah, all the anime you guys have mentioned are pretty great (though I haven't seen any Hataraku Saibou.

I'd like to say that Major 2nd is quite good and seems like a thing that would be underrated. Though technically it started last season.

  9. #1145602018-09-01 18:12:17Kani14 said:

@Kinnear That's the problem with Hanebado, it's predictable and that's exactly what will happen. I low key want her to be like, I don't care peasants shows the middle finger and leave them all behind, but that would never happen.

I should watch Major I haven't watched anything baseball related yet .

Watch Planet With. Satoshi Mizukami is an incredibly talented writer, and while I wouldn't (thus far) put his first anime on par with the likes of The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer or Spirit Circle, it's still a joy to see his zany ideas in motion, and the themes, while not subtle, are juicy and well-considered. I honestly don't know if the community at large has picked up on how good this show is yet, but I'm not gonna pass up a chance to plug it.

Title of this thread should be changed, at least. It's misleading and incorrect and can (and should) apply to more than one show.

  12. #1145662018-09-02 12:02:49 *Kani14 said:

@Kirn It is applied to more shows I'm just asking everyone on the forum what do they think was under rated in their opinion.

    I'll make it more clearer.

  13. #1145672018-09-02 12:29:05Kani14 said:

Edit: I did some changes, now it's not about just 2018 anime but all the anime you guys think didn't get enough credit or were just overlooked or some guilty pleasures you have to share. Doesn't matter if they are old or new just share you opinions about them.

I hope this makes the thread more clearer than before. Thank you.

The most underrated anime of all time in my eyes is Little Busters!. It would be my favorite anime if it weren't for Steins;Gate's nostalgia. People overlook it in favor of other Key anime like Clannad and Angel Beats, especially since the best part of Little Busters is the end, which doesn't happen until thirty something episodes in (Not to say the rest isn't phenomenal as well). But rest assured, it's absolutely amazing. Watch it. It's on Crunchyroll.

@DarkChaplain Yea, I don't know why you had to say that because I do know Cowboy Bebop, Yu-Gi-Oh and Initial D. They all aired in Summer 1998 season. So it being airing before I was born doesn't really have to do with me not knowing Cardcaptor Sakura but whatever.

    I think, Solty Rei.

i'm not really sure if it's "underrated" though, but i never heard anyone mentioning that one. https://static.zerochan.net/Solty.Rei.full.154930.jpg

I knew the series from Animax Asia channel, and yeah.. i think you should watch it. It's cool, i promise.

    Asobi Asobase

    ;_;

Dunno about Louie but I never see any posts about Asobi other than the occasional obligatory post from crunchy >:(

but yeah, comedy's amazing. I hate comedy anime but this one was gold. Also, cute girls. :c

  18. #1146122018-09-09 18:32:03Kani14 said:

@DarkChaplain Isn't it more like, not accepting the fact that people actually like it. Rather than having a solid reason to criticize the show, you criticize the viewer. You like this anime? You are immature and 12 years old. You don't like this anime that I like, that already got a low score it deserves? You are just shallow and don't understand the meaning.

Oh wait, you are suppose to be hating on everything, go on.

If we're talking about underrated animus this season and with a comedy genre, I think Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro tops Asobi Asobase in both being underrated and being a comedy gold.

Bokura wa minna kawaisou in my humble opinion is quite underrated. Peeps give me blank faces whenever I talk about it. I don't want it to be too much of a mainstream but it should atleast be known.

  21. #1146162018-09-11 01:45:54Bavalt said:

Kawaisou strikes a great balance - it's hilarious, but also has a lot of heart (and an OP by fhana, so, y'know, bonus points.) I'm in agreement that it didn't get as much attention as it deserved while it was airing. Wish it'd been successful enough to merit more seasons.

Indeed, and the best part of the story is how they tell the innocent love of two teenagers unlike the usual grab em by the boob then boom harem. It makes me feel butterflies in my stomach every rewatch and leaves me wishing to have the same cute lovestory as them. Goodness gracious the op that song paired with that video absolute ear and eyegasm.
