Anyway some real input, a couple of series I really like at the moment which fit your criteria include (in no particular order but these are at the top of my feeds for obvious reasons):
Ao Haru Ride (shoujo)
Usotsuki Lily (shoujo)
Seiyuu Ka! (shoujo)
Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo (shounen) <- this mangaka also wrote Yankee-kun to Megane-chan which is also another excellent series which fits in your criteria
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (shoujo)
And another vote for Orange by Takano Ichigo as suggested by @Kyuuun because it looks like it has quite a lot of potential to be a good shoujo.
And hey, I can't be bothered to go through my RSS feeds for the top series I like at the moment. Just take a whiz with the mangafox search and you'll be guaranteed something decent. Sort according to highest rating or go through all of them if you're feeling more adventurous. Good luck.

Why bother reading the Madoka manga? The only ones worth reading are the original stories, like Kazumi and Oriko.
