Welcome to CL's New and Exciting Short Story Contest!

This Thread is currently a work in progress and thus Locked until preparations are finished!
This means that EVERYTHING written here UNTIL the thread gets unlocked might be subject to change!

However, this should not stop you from getting excited already :) Check back later!

Initiated by @Cenica, we're about to have our first real and official CL Short Story Contest!
After a bit over a week of planning and discussing the contest's details, it is now time to kick it off and get the users writing!

    So here are the details:

    Format, Genre and Restrictions

You will be writing an original Thriller or Horror story.

This has been decided by community vote, and so it shall be.
You are free to mix in other genres or themes, as long as the story can be recognized as falling into one of the above.

You shall plan your story to take up around 3500 words.

Plan your structure and pacing accordingly!

The absolute Word Limit which may not be exceeded is 5000.

Stories longer than 5000 words will be disqualified and not receive feedback from the Jury, or be posted for the community as part of the contest.

The following Not Safe for Work Restrictions apply:

There may be no purely sexual scenes in your story. While your story may have sexual aspects, taking it too far will have you disqualified. Tasteless smut will not be tolerated!

Violence and Gore are permitted, as long as they do not step into tasteless territory, glorify the act of violence or become too graphic for the story's own good.
We will not prohibit the use of violent, shocking scenes, but make sure your story is better off for them, or that they support your story's concept.
Excessive gore or violence is best left out of your story.

    Regarding Fan- and Tie-in Fiction

Do not write fan or tie-in fiction. Work on your own, original story instead.
Do not restrict yourself to already existing franchises or characters, and best keep in mind that the reader will not have existing knowledge on any one franchise you might try to touch on anyway.
This means no Anime, no Space Marines, no Ice and Fire, no Trolls, and also no CL users.

You are allowed to tie your story into that of another participant, as long as it can be read and understood on its own!

This means that you may "team up" with another user to touch a subject from another angle, or have a cross-over scene, as long as neither story relies on the other to be understood or enjoyed, and the writing is still clearly split - having your partner write the story for you is prohibited!

This still requires explicit permission from the Jury!

    Contest Schedule

Writing starts from this thread's unlocking. You will have until Monday, the 24th of June to submit your story.

Following the Deadline, the Jury will sort through your submissions and will make them accessible to the Community to read and comment on.

The Contest closes with the Jury giving their own comments and Feedback on approximately the 1st of July and announce the Winner of the Contest.

    Submitting Your Story

Do NOT post your full story, or huge chunks of it, on this thread or anywhere else on the forum! Submissions solely via the forum or PM will NOT be accepted!

Instead, either PM me a properly formatted .rtf (Wordpad) document or similar.
Alternatively you may send the document file via Skype (@ DarkChaplain). Copy/Pasted text and external websites are a no-go!

The document itself may not use colored text or fancy fonts. Keep it simple, keep it clean. Make sure your formatting makes it easy to read your story.

The reason for this is that your stories will need to be distributed to the rest of the jury, and that is easiest with neatly formatted files rather than plain text.
The final publication for the rest of the community after the Jury has had time to go over them will also be handled in a more ordered way, which I will explain below.

Please do not submit your stories before the 20th!
In case you finish up earlier than that, take all the time you have left to read over it and polish your submission rather than getting it out first. Remember, the deadline is on the 24th!

    The Jury

The Jury (at this time) consists of multiple regular members:

The contest winners will be decided by the Jury, and it is up to each of them to take the community's opinions to heart or disregard them entirely.
We want to hear people's opinions before finalizing our decisions and giving our verdict, but please note that this is no public vote!

The Jury will give Feedback, Criticism and Tips on every submitted story that meets the contest requirements and is not being disqualified for one reason or another. They will also keep watch over the contest and respond to direct questions where possible, but will not hold your hands throughout the writing process.
You are allowed to ask the Jury for help or feedback on smaller excerpts of your story, but it will be up to them to either grant it at the time or not.
Try asking your fellow participants first!

    The Reward

Aside from the satisfaction of having written a full short story of your own, you will be receiving a badge:

Additionally, every contestant will have his story edited into a proper ebook anthology which will be downloadable by them and the rest of the community. Currently planned formats for this ebook release are .epub, .mobi and .pdf.
The top 3 stories will be the first three in the anthology (don't worry, there'll be an index to jump right to whichever story you feel like reading), the rest will be randomly placed after them.

Doesn't sound bad for bragging rights, don't you think?

That will be all for now! Start Writing!

I'm in. I have a rough draft at the moment, needs a fair bit of improvement before I can even throw it to the grinder for review.

Sorry, but I'd rather not pick you for the job, Sol. Judging from experience I can't really see you sticking around for long, and will probably be gone within a week or two. I'd rather not rely on you for the job right after your return.
