    MOSCOW | Tue Sep 10, 2013 7:28am EDT

(Reuters) - The Syrian government has accepted a Russian proposal to put its chemical weapons under international control to avoid a possible U.S. military strike, Interfax news agency quoted Syria's foreign minister as saying on Tuesday.

"We held a very fruitful round of talks with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov yesterday, and he proposed an initiative relating to chemical weapons. And in the evening we agreed to the Russian initiative," Interfax quoted the minister, Walid al-Moualem, as telling the speaker of Russia's lower house parliament house in Moscow.

He said Syria had agreed because this would "remove the grounds for American aggression," the report said.

    Well it's a baby step.

Next all Assad needs to do is order the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Expeditionary Force out of the country along with the Hezbollah Terror Corps and there needs to be an end to these Russian Military Freighters sailing into the country loaded with weapons.

Also he needs to realise his little joke he pulled with Cyprus wasn't funny and if any of his Fighter/Bombers do enter Cyprus airspace the RAF will shoot them down them without warning and he can bitch and whine all he wants that his "High Tech" toys were destroyed.

@hellstorm901 there's no question that there are heavy geopolitics involved. Russian vs US dominance of the area means no gas/oil pipeline straight to Europe. Though in light of the US neglect to provide the UN Security Council with adequate evidence against Assad and in favor of invasion (as Putin suggested), this was a very smart move.

But just as the US will not turn on the Saudis or the Muslim Brotherhood, so will the Russians not sell out their "unsavory" allies in the Middle East.

If you look at it from an impartial perspective, the world is just a really funny sitcom with dangerous weapons involved. :3

The strong characters have some type of problem with being over-controlling and the weaker characters act foolishly for their overlords, all in the name of temporary appeasement to greed. XD

With connections to Iran and Hezbollah Assad could turn over his entire chemical weapons stockpile as have it replaced in no time at all.

This announcement was also being made not long after a UN report finds 8:1 Assad:FSA used chemical weapons thus immediately undermining Russia at the UN and providing legitimate reason to go in. Seems Assad only is going to do this because he knew if he didn't he'd royally be screwed.
