Newfag / Idiot Badge Feedback Thread

I agree with @Cenica, while some users might find it offensive, some still like it and this is why we can feel mixed about these badges. But I still think they should be removed. I mean just look at this thread. When @REBEL was given the badge, the mod who did it assumed he will get the joke, but what happened instead? He wanted the badge removed and got flamed by @Momimochi and @Jacek.
And this is exactly what @Fieyr was talking about.

Newfag and Certified Idiot badges. I believe they were meant as a one-off joke. Some took them seriously and were insulted. Some were amused and want to keep them for comical effect.

How about removing all of them after a certain date, and if anyone wanted to keep them for any reason, they speak up? A 'speak now or forever hold your peace' matter.

I approve of this course of action :)

    Basically.

    1. Yay new badges.
    2. They're not very funny but I think they could be changed into better versions of the same concept.
    3. One of them would be better off removed completely. (The cancer one)
    4. haha kirn called DC a clown for the april's fool thing.
    5. I wish I was artsy enough to make some badges.

I'm still waiting for that rabu badge back?

Badges are kind of dumb anyway I think they tilt the balance towards "traditional forum" a bit too far but if we are going to have them I suggest we have only "positive" things on them. In other words, don't use them to brand people as newfags or "idiots". I mean they're a funny joke sure but when someone gets one for no good reason and has to look at it every time they go to their profile does it really make them enjoy the site more?

I don't think anyone who is writing things like this understands the purpose of them. They were not meant to be used to brand members outside of April 1st. You're being too sensitive to it. I agree that if they were legitimately used to brand members, that's pushing it and in that cause I wouldn't support the use of them, but they're used purely for comedic effect.

Yea I know. That's what I was getting at. It's funny the first time around and maybe if someone really is being a total douche or idiot a badge can be awarded for a couple days or so to make them reflect on behaviour that won't be tolerated by the community, but forcing one to keep that on their profile for extended periods of time is no bueno.

Again, you're not understanding the point to them. That's not what they're for. No one has even so much as hinted as them being used as a form of branding or punishment. We have alternate ways of handling people that use behavior that isn't tolerated, badges are necessary.

I fail to see how "Idiot" and "newfag" can be construed as something other than negative but whatever. The very act of giving a user such a badge is already a form of branding or punishment. Are you saying that these types of badges or badges in general should not exist at all? In that case I would have to agree with you. But in the case that they /do/ exist, I would have to insist that they not be used as a permanent black mark on a user's profile and instead as a short joke between friends. And if badges in general are to exist, that they be mostly used to promote positive behaviour instead of punish bad behaviour. Of course it would be best to not have badges at all or simply just not these negative badges, but since they now exist their scope of use should at least be limited.

Short: 1. Badges should not exist at all, imo. 2. If they do exist they should seek to reward positive behaviour. 3. If negative badges are to exist they should not be given out for extended periods of time/used as a type of permanent branding.

It's neither negative nor positive when used sarcastically. Which was why they were given out.

As a joke. It's not meant to be taken seriously like you're doing.

    No

    They already are, retard.

I honestly hope this is you not understanding English properly or you're not being serious. I don't want to believe that you're seriously having such a hard time understanding such a simple concept that is being explained clearly.

All new badges added during the April Fools events will be removed.

This is due to the controversial comments between users who didn't enjoy the change and the follow-up of debates on why users would want to keep them.

To avoid unnecessary drama, these new badges will be removed until further notice:

    Newfag:
This user is a newfag. He/She just joined, and has already made a fool of him/herself. Oh the humanity... http://i.imgur.com/yU51FO5.png

    Certified Idiot:
This user is an idiot. A moron. A complete imbecile. Take everything he says with a grain of salt. http://i.imgur.com/LsvGlya.png

I believe this is for the best. Those badges have served their purpose during the April Fools' event, which has now passed. Furthermore, this decision should reassure the users who were unsatisfied with them.

Are we going to go through this shit again? What you want to do here is to use the resources of the site to stroke your own ego. Resources here being badges, which have to be used for some actual purpose, and not for shit reasons. Didn't I show you how to have a pop-up description on your profile pictures? Use that and be content.
By wanting to have a personal badge just for you you are not only demeaning the badges idea on this fucking site, you creating a rotten precedent. So, if you would have it, what would stop me from having my personal badge in the database? Even more, what would stop Deftones from having a personal badge with a kangaroo holding a bottle of rum? Because there would be no difference between those three examples.
By continuing to refuse this, you are only disappointing me more.
