    So I just watched the first episode maybe half an hour ago.

    Disclaimer: I have only watched a single episode of the original Soul Eater anime, and that was many years ago.

    Did I enjoy Not! regardless? Yes, I did. It explained the important bits and context for this first episode just fine, and not knowing the plot of Soul Eater itself did not detract from my enjoyment.

    I did, however, benefit from having seen Maka in action before, because quite a few characters make a cameo appearance right off the bat. Gif of kick-ass Maka below.

    Gonna follow this, and maybe watch Soul Eater after all, despite the 51 episodes length. I'm curious to see how the situation surrounding the MC-girl will turn out.

    After watching both the first and second episode, I can honestly say they gave it worse to us than I had expected, and I was expecting it to be pretty bad. I realize this is sort of a side story, but really, what was the point of giving us a Soul Eater's knock-off of every 13-year-old's shoujo high school anime. I love the original Soul Eater but sad as it may be, the creators never had any intent of making this side-story to follow in the footsteps of it's predecessor. The first episode was as generic as you can get. The 3 main characters, as far as I can tell, follow the most basic of the archetypes. The animation is fairly well done, but as a fan of the original, it's sad to see the darker tone swept away like that. I feel like it will be near impossible to really engage myself into this anime. It just feels too bland for my tastes and I may even consider dropping it if it doesn't pick it up in the next 2 or so episodes. I will give them points for exploring the premise of DWMA's school side, but it just isn't enough. Also, the gender-bent DTK , "Tsugumi" is still pretty cute. Tsu

    @Teil
    Not!'s Manga has been running since 2011, 2 years before the manga for the actual Soul Eater ended. The author's the same one.

    But the title says it all: This is NOT Soul Eater! It is a spin-off with a completely different focus - and that is completely fine. Generic it may look, sure, but it does what it sets out to do: Give a different spin on the Soul Eater setting, and expanding the world beyond what is possible in the plot-driven main series.
    And even with the cliche school setting, it does a good enough job to be part of the world. I'll wait and see how it goes on.

    I've not watched it yet, but saw Soul Eater and read the first few chapters of NOT! When it was released. Might as well check it out.

    Episode 2 was full of humor and quite a bit more development for Anya, as well as a bit for Meme. More of the cast got revealed, leading into episode 3.

    Episode 3 hinted at a darker plot, and a short fight against a baddie comes up in the second half. The bulk of the episode, however, was about Kim Diehl, who Soul Eater fans should be familiar with.

    Note: NOT!, at this point, is a prequel. Soul Eater's main plot has not come to pass yet, and the show depicts earlier incarnations of the SE characters.

    Overall, I enjoyed my time with the first three episodes.

    It also seems like the Mangaka is finishing up the story in Volume 5 of the Manga, and that he wants people to "see the climax first in the anime" or somesuch. So it will hopefully end like the Manga does, and this one season will be the complete SEN story.
