  1. Character Spotlights

    #744942014-05-01 03:19:02 *Teil said:

Within the various forms of media, arts, literature, etc., there are countless characters that engrave themselves into our very beings. Whether you notice it or not, chances are some character from some form of entertainment has left an impact on you, even if it was a small one. The purpose of this thread is to reach into your bank of character knowledge and create a "Character Spotlight" for said character. This is a detailed construct outlining a chosen character's information, origin, impact (whether it be in it's own context or within the real world), and your own personal opinion. I would rather this be an organized thread so I will lay down a few rules.

    Character Choices

You may choose your character from any form of information abiding by the choices provided.

    • Books
    • Television Shows
    • Manga
    • Anime
    • Video-Games
    • Visual Novels
    • Movies
    • Myths (provided enough information is available)

As most other sources would result in a severe lack of description, please refrain from using characters from other forms of work such as songs, and poems. Characters that play roles within NSFW works are also to be avoided. It also goes without saying, but I feel like I should say it anyways, DO NOT Spotlight a real person. This applies to present, and past people.

What to include within the character's Spotlight:

    • The form of entertainment the character appears in
    • The title of the series/work
    • The characters basic information (name, age, gender, etc)
    • Appearance and personality
    • A picture of the character if available
    • The creator of the character (author, studio, etc.)
    • Contribution to the work
    • Your own take on the character

    Other contributions to the Spotlight:

    • Fanart
    • Theme songs
    • Merchandise
    • Impact to the form of media/literature the character is seen in
    • Race of the character
    • Aliases
    • Abilities

Feel free to personalize your Spotlight if you wish, but please maintain an organized appearance. If you're going to half-ass this with three or four sentences then, with all do respect, don't bother posting. Also, avoid spoilers as much as possible. If you want, you can follow the template below in order to make your Spotlight.

    Character Name

    Form of work:

    Title of work:

    Name of creator or publisher:

    Gender & Age:

    Kohina Hiruko

Form of work: Light Novel, Manga, Anime

    Title of work: Black Bullet

Co-creators: Shiden Kanzaki & Saki Ukai

    Publisher : ASCII Media Works

    Gender: Female

    Age: Ten

    Race: Human

Kohina Kohina Hiruko takes the appearance of a small, slender girl that fits her age of ten. She has grey eyes, glowing red when angered/excited, and blue hair in a messy fashion. She is always seen within a semi-long, old fashioned dress complete with matching shoes. More than often, she is seen carrying two black swords.

Kohina is, bluntly put, a psychopath. Her entire being revolves around her sadistic personality. She is not hesitant to outright butcher any who stand in her way and will often jump at the opportunity. At times, it appears Kohina is emotionally unstable. She is unable to contain feelings of anger, revenge, and despair, lashing out at anyone unfortunate enough to confront her in such states. Her twisted personality matches her dark appearance in order to complete her observed character.

Within Black Bullet, Kohina plays the role of a secondary antagonist. Often, she can be confused as one of the main antagonists as she is almost always seen with him. For the majority of the series, Kohina serves as an obstacle-class villain, standing in the way of the protagonists, ready to cut them into pieces. Her very existence however, is linked directly towards the center aspect of Black Bullet's plot, the "Gastrea." Due to her being part-mutant, she is able to wield the incredible power that she possess. Using this power, she rampages through the series, decimating countless side-characters in order to meet the main antagonists goals.

Personally, Kohina Hiruko incorporates a vast majority of character traits that I love seeing within anime. Her blood-thirsty tendencies make it impossible for me to take my eyes off of her during her screen/page time. To me, she isn't exactly what I'd call a memorable character all-in-all, rather, a relief to the work. She brings out the darker tone of the series in such a way that she was one of the main contributors to me involving myself within Black Bullet. Combine this with my favourite character archetype, and you have me just having to Spotlight her.

    "Gintoki Sakata"

    Form of Work: Manga, Anime

    Title of Work: Gintama

    Co-creators: Hideaki Sorachi

    Publisher: Shueisha and Viz Media

    Gender: Male

    Age: 20's

Epithet: Shiroyasha, Gin-chan, Kintoki, Paako, Gin, Gin-san, Ginnoji

"The best way to live a full life is to be a child, no matter what your age."

Gintoki Sakata appears to have a natural permed, silver hair, that sometimes he wished that it would be straight. He has red "dead-fish" eyes. He wears a black-tshirt, a summer kimono, boots, and seen to carry a bamboo katana on his waist.

Gintoki is a highly skilled samurai, a fourth wall breaker and is always shown to have a funny side. He may appear like a man of 20's, but he has many childish personality. He is lazy, and has a soft spot for parfait, strawberry milk, meat and other sweet foods. He fears dentists, ghosts, and everything that is spooky. He is seen to dress various disguises for their gags. Despite his soft and funny side, he is called Shiroyasha or White Demon when he fights seriously, because he appears like a demon covered in blood when he is in battle. He has immense strength and endurance, that his wooden katana can break anything, despite that it's just a wooden katana. Gintoki will never abandon his friends, and will protect them at the risk of his own life. Never underestimate his childish personality.

In Gintama, Gintoki Sakata is one of the main protagonist in the series. He appeared in all of the episodes of the series, because everything revolves around him. Randomness, gags and epic fights, Gintoki is present at these situations, and he will never, ever fail to make the viewers laugh or cry. Due to his past that haunts him, Gintoki is very protective to his friends, and through the whole series, he laughed and fought with them, to the point that, he considered his friends and the ones associated to him, family.

Overall, Gintoki Sakata taught and inspired me to become the person I am right now with his quotes and sayings, third only to God's Words and my mother. As a person, I have two sides: the lone wolf side and the funny side, and he has some of my traits in my funny side - being childish, loving sweet things, risking myself to protect others, etc. For me, I wouldn't say that he is my favorite anime character, rather, he is one of the characters I wouldn't forget, for he has taught me the good things about life. Still, in real life, my personality is being a lone wolf, and these traits appear when I have to socialize with other people. Well, that's my Spotlight.

    John Galt

From the Book ATLAS SHRUGGED which was written by Ayn Rand.

The book is largely about big business and a failing world in terms of economic stability. The book expresses the values of and how it's best for one to take what they make for themselves while the "moochers" rot alone. It is not a book or message I agree with, but regardless it was written very well!

The recurring phrase in the book is "Who is John Galt" and it has a very interesting place. John Galt is depicted in the book as a young man who works with his hands in an industrial job. He and his two friends as young men delved into philosophy among other things. Galt invents an almost-impossible motor that's more advanced than anything before, then shows up at a company meeting with this and, after a short but interesting speech, says he will "Stop the motor of the world" and goes missing for years.

meanwhile there's a steady decay in the world around the main characters. One by one the useful and innovative inventors and business-owners disappear. The phrase they all think of when there's no explanation is "Who's John Galt?".

Well by the end they find out.

    Fun Extra

The idea of all useful and innovative people being taken from society in the book ATLAS SHRUGGED is a large basis of the lore of the game BIOSHOCK. a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?

No, says the man in Washington, it belongs to the poor.

No, says the man in the Vatican, it belongs to God.

No, says the man in Moscow, it belongs to everybody.

I rejected those answers. Instead I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...Rapture.

    Ayn Rand.

    Close enough.

And yeah, Atlas Shrugged is one of my favorite books, though it can get a little out of hand. As a book I wouldn't rate it very highly, but if you read this for 'dialogue' or 'plot' you were reading it for the wrong reasons.

    Yuki Asuna

Form of Art: Light Novel, Manga and Anime

Title of Work: Sword Art Online

    Creator: Reki Kawahara

    Publisher: ASCII Media Works

    Gender: Female

    Age: 17

    Race: Human

    Epiteth: Flash, Berserk Healer

At first Asuna has the appearance as a loner as when she first appears in the series she is very quiet and is under a hood for the first few episodes. She has orange eyes to match her orange hair. For the majority of the series she is wearing the Knights of the Blood uniform. She is also very well known for using her saber with earned her the nickname Flash.

Asuna is a kind person. Similar to Kirito she cannot abandon another in battle. She starts off being very seriously until Kirito tells her to relax. Though sometimes she can be controlled by her emotions.

In the story of SAO Asuna plays the part of the second main character. She is Kirito's companion for most of the first arc of the story. She is also the Sub-Leader of the Knights of the Blood.

    Form of Art: Anime Movie

Title of Work: Tonari no Totoro

    Creator: Hayao Miyazaki

    Publisher: Studio Ghibli

    Gender: Male

Race: Japanese Forest Spirit Totoro's appearance is pretty much like a giant fluff ball. He is a very tall creature. He has fluffy grey fur with a light yellow belly with some brown patches in the shape of the tops of arrows. He has black eyes and a GIGANTIC mouth. He doesn't have much of a personality except that he is kind to Mei and Satsuki. He also helps plants grow everywhere.

Totoro plays a major part in the story as when Mei finds him in the forest and instantly likes him. He also helps the girls find each other via the catbus and also brings them to see their mother who is dying in the hospital.

    Kawaii Retsu

    Title: Bokura Wa Minna Kawaisou.

    Gender: Female.

Age: Estimated at seventeen years old.

Role in Story: She is the second main character in the story, and also the character our main tries to get to fall in love with.

Personality: Kawaii Retsu is a very different character from the usual heroines in the comedy/romance genre of anime, she doesn't really fit the tsundere OR the idiotic type at all. She, would rather fit more into just being an awkward tomato who gets embarrassed and shy quite easily. She's a bookworm that gets easily wrapped up on her reading to the point she starts losing sense of her time-place. She doesn't have many friends, keeps from talking a lot, basically dismissed as an anti-social and likes to keep her distance and may appear expressionless, but she rather is rather quite lovely on the inside.

Creator: Kawaii Retsu is a fictional character from the work of Mangaka Miyahara Ruri . The mangaka who is still relatively new yet shows signs of success, and she deserves it for great sense of humor so far. Two works of hers currently have been adapted into anime series, and they've been met well with fans so far, which shows she has promise and hopefully a longer career in this business.

Opinion: You want my opinion on her? Quite easy, she is a very lovely character for me. And the change in her personality really makes me relieved, as I don't have to expect the same cliche personality from a lot of anime, and her role is rather adorable. She is very timid yet smart, but not social enough, can show quite the fury and strong personality if she needs to, and when she's in a good mood, you can't help but smile. Truly a very well done character so far, in a very well done anime as well. I hope they continue being as good as they are right now, always getting better an episode by episode, and I keep loving her a lot as well.

    Hachiman Hikigaya

Form of Work: Manga, Anime, Light Novel

Title of Work: Yahari Ore Seishun Rabu Kome wa Machigatteiru (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU)

    Co-creators: Wataru Watari

    Publisher: Shogakukan

    Gender: Male

    Age: 16

    Epithet: Hikki

Ahem. Hachiman Hikigaya is teenage boy - black haired, and the most noticeable about him is having "dead fish" eyes.

Hachiman's personality is a loner and matured one - rebellious, friendless, hostile and isolated. He firmly believes that "youth" is an illusion created by hypocrites, for hypocrites, born from the ashes of past failures. He is called "gross" and "disgusting" because of how he acts in class. His personality came from his painful childhood experiences. Despite this, he is skilled in Japanese, as well as Japanese History and artistic skills. He also respects his sister to a high degree. He always go home before his sister, because she hated returning to an empty house.

Throughout the series, he belongs to the Service Club, that offers help and advice to others, along with Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama. He tends to argue with Yukino, for the fact both of them have different personalities, ideals, perspectives and aspects. Also, he was seen to go through various methods for the sake of other people...

In the nutshell, this is one of the anime I watched, that sided with "the loner's perspective" (something along those lines). I personally love the anime, even though some of his quotes are 2deep4me, but I'm hoping for a second season. Like I said on my first post, I have two sides: the lone wolf side and the funny side, and he has some of my traits in my lone wolf side - rejecting everything, hostile, not trusting others, etc. He's the only one who taught me the perspectives of a loner. Welp, that's another Character Spotlight.

I can't express the thought of Hachiman, so I'm going to post his quotes:

"I hate nice girls. Just by exchanging greetings with them will get them on your mind. Start texting each other, and your heart will be set a flutter. If they call you, you're done for. Enjoy staring at your logs and grinning like a fool. However, I won't be fooled again. That's what your kind calls kindness. If you are nice to me, you're also nice to others. I always end nearly forgetting that. Reality is cruel, so I'm sure lies are a form of kindness. Thus, I say kindness itself is also a lie. I always ended up with these expectations. And I always ended up with these misunderstandings. And before I knew it, I stopped hoping. A highly-trained loner is once bitten, twice shy. As a veteran on this battlefield of life, I've gotten used to losing. That's why I will always… hate nice girls.

"There's probably no one who's more of a realist than the unpopular loner. I have lived my life with the Three Nevers of the Unpopular: Never to hold (hope), Never to open (your heart), Never to treasure (sweet words)."

"People often say, "If I change myself, I'll change the world." That's a load of crap. People's judgment of other creates a stereotype, and that's the impression that lasts. Loners are forced to do things alone. If try to stand out by working hard at something, you just become a target for attack. It's the rotten rule of the children's kingdom."

    Third (AKA Heather Sigurd)

    Form of work: Anime/ Manga

Title of work: Jyu-oh-sei: Planet of the Beast King (i recommend this)

Creator or publisher: The manga was created by Natsumi Itsuki. Then later animated by Bones and has since been translated and become a work by FUNimation.

    Gender & Age: Male/unknown

Third is what I like to call the comic relief he is sorta fishy but like. He SEEMS like a really caring guy under his smug and witty exterior but turns out not to be. He is a ladies man and the women in Chimaera, who are allowed to chose their mate seem to be really sweet on him because of his bad boy attitude. The main, Thor, would probably not accomplished everything that he wanted to with out him but Third was always playing him with his skill's or persuasion.

He is known only as ‘Third’ as he is the third in command of Ochre Ring, one of the four main rings of Chimaeran society, claiming that it has been so long since he was called by his original name that he can no longer remember it. He acts as a supporter of Thor when he declares that he intends to become the Beast King. He says that he cannot love Chen the way she wants because he is in love with another woman from Earth -- this is most likely a lie.

In the last few episodes, his true intentions surface: he was using Thor to complete a mission given to him by his commander so that he could go to Earth, but much to his dismay, on a mission to save Chimaera, he discovers that Earth had been destroyed 130 years ago. He commits suicide in order to force Thor into escaping from Hecate. His real name is revealed to be Heather Sigurd, near the end of the show.

I personally love this character because of his smugness and rudeness and how his is just a complete and utter badass. He could, in my opinion, easily defeat anyone within the series but is clever enough to use them to get what he wants... which is the only mistake Third did as he had a little blind faith. Although if I were to team up with anyone on Chimaeran it would be this dude.

    Rika Furude

Form of work: Visual Novel, Anime, Manga, Video Game, Live Action Movie, Sat Nav (Yes she's a Sat Nav voice over too)

Title of work: Higurahi no Naku Koro ni

Name of creator or publisher: 07th Expansion

    Gender & Age: Female/Unknown Possibly over 100

Race: Human Witch/Creation of a Witch

Personality: Rika is a very sweet girl who is kind to everyone, she often appears to encourage other characters in their time of need and demonstrates that she is a very wise person at times. Rika cares for her friends dearly including her best friend Satoko and enjoys the time she has playing games with them. On the outside she maintains a constant positive personality while fulfilling her villages role as Shrine Maiden. (Spoiler and I do mean bloody spoiler) Rika claims to have lived for hundreds of years due to a groundhog day loop in which she is fully aware of each loop, this has led to her becoming a very cold person with a cynical opinion about the world. Despite physically being a minor she engages in drinking alcohol possibly to try and forget about the reality she's in. Rika does have a limit to how much she will tolerate and will use violence if pushed too far

It's difficult to explain Rikas role in the story without spoilers so if you care not then mouse over Rika is trying to break out of the groundhog day loop she is trapped in in which she is fated to be murdered and her death used as the trigger for her villages destruction. Precisely what Rika is is a mystery within the series due to the series being entwined with Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Rika is one of my most favourite characters of all time and she is the driving force of this series. Without her existence their would be no plot altogether. She is adorable beyond all belief and the living definition of cute.
