Some Of The The Best 10 OPs - A Nostalgia Fest of Anime Openings

So please forgive the self indulgent nature of this thread but I was chatting to @olivaisfire1997 and we suddenly started on about our favourite OPs that we remembered from stuff we've watched over the years. Now these are things that STILL bring the feels for us and I hope that they do for you too and remind you of that excitement you felt watching your favourite shows at the time.

Please also share YOUR own favourites below or comment on the ones I've posted.

So in no particular order (although I numbered them anyways just cos)...

I also added the name of the song and the artist where I knew them

    1. "Again" by Yui - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

The first opening for FMA Brotherhood and by far my favourite of all the FMA OPs. The first anime series I ever watched was FMA and I got hold of this thinking it would be a crock since I loved the original. I remember hearing this and instantly being hyped (I still am when I hear it) and feeling a big grin spreading across my face. The opening animation was pretty emotional too.

olivaisfire1997 argued a bit about this cos he liked the second one more so I'll also leave all of them here for you to make your own minds up (I think they get progressively less good..and spoilers):

    2. "Guns & Roses" by Paradise Lunch - Baccano!

So this was so upbeat and exciting but also engaging, introducing all the main characters with energy. More than that it just sets you up for some fun crazy times! Also, who on CL hasn't seen Baccano! huh? If you haven't then go watch it!

    3. "My Soul, your Beats!" by Lia/Jun Maeda - Angel Beats

The first piano version was so evocative. You may not have totally liked this anime but but it was a nice opening tune. I actually think this conjures more up after you've seen it a bit because of dem feels.

    4. "Tank!" by The Seatbelts - Cowbow Bebop

Probably THE coolest OP for anything ever. Even Archer totally ripped it off! It oozes style into both your eyes and ears.

    5. "Kaidoku Funo" by Jinn - Code Geass

Possibly one of my fave shows. Originally I wasn't sure about this OP when I was fresh to Code Geass but it grew on me quickly and I never skipped it at all. A lot of people prefer the first one (olivaisfire1997 did) but this is my post and I loved this, especially the chorus.

Lalouche looks to camera at the end

    First OP if you're interested:

    6. "Bouken Desho Desho" by Hirano Aya - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

So pop-y and upbeat and crazy plus all that cute bouncing around. I have so much love for this anime and it all starts with this OP.

    7. "Resonance" by T.M. Revolution / "Papermoon" by Tommy - Soul Eater

I can never decide which of these is my fave so I cheated and named them BOTH.

Resonance has this creepy and frenetic pace that is practically anxiety inducing due to that beat but also a bunch of what appear to be raving characters.

    Resonance: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHtjk0RNco0

Papermoon is just a beautiful song with some animation to match in it's mournful and tragedy anticipating joy. I still want to do this as a CL chorus one day...

    8. "The World Without Logos" by Yasushi Ishii - Hellsing

The original Hellsing had a tonne of faults but this was the ultimate jazzy, smooth, sultry "fuck you I'm Hellsing son" OP. Splash some gore on that and call it the best horror anime OP (maybe). It really promised a lot of fun without worrying about "nice" things.

    9. "Flyers" by BRADIO - Death Parade

"Everyone..put your hands up..!" A charming and fun OP with a real joie de vivre, which is of course ironic. Beautifully animated and entertaining. Makes you wanna party to death huh?

Also, the original band vid here:

    10. "ft" by FUNKIST - Fairy Tale

I expect you'll disagree with me but this is my favourite of all the FT OPs. It's joyous and captures everything I love about FT - the characters are like family and friends, it's upbeat and positive whatever happens, it's a real kick ass OP! Plus lots of Erza time in the animation and some nice feels.

So, what do you think? What did I miss out?

Well, after being mentioned like that I can't really stay quiet now can I? So, I guess I'll make a little list of my own to partner up with the original. Although a few of my favs have already been posted by @Taro_Tanako there are still quite a few that I either never told him, or that we disagreed on. Still I will restrict myself to the same number as him and stick to 10 OP's, or else I'd fill this thread to the brim.

    1. "Küsö Mesorogiwi" by Yousei Teikoku - Mirai Nikki

One of the most graphic and intense OP's I've seen, both visually and musically. This opening was my first introduction to the series actually, before watching it I asked a friend what he had thought of it, and asked if I would like it, he just chuckled and showed me this. And I got to say, there really is no better way to explain this anime to someone who hasn't watched it yet.

    2. "H.T" by Tsuneo Imahori - Trigun

Okay, so not only is this one of the most awesome anime around, not only is it hot gunslinging action in a post-apocaliptic future, not only does it have a bad-ass MC in a red jacket. But it has this OP that just oozes coolness from it, but not the jazzy relaxed coolness from Hellsing, instead you have the somewhat chaotic and fast riffs of a rockin' guitar that actually go very well with the MC's life. So yeah, it's one of my fav's. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSX58TglZRs

    3. "Uninstall" by Chiaki Ishikawa - Bokurano

So little kids pilot a giant robot to save the worl- Wait! Wait! This anime isn't as basic as you think, it holds many surprises up it's sleeve, and they are somewhat spoiled by this genial OP, now I won't go into much further detail, because this is an anime everyone should see.

    4. "Hacking to the Gate" by Itou Kanako - Steins;Gate

Honestly, kinda surprised Taro left this one out, being a fan of this anime and all. Plus, just look at it, the animation, how it works so well with the music, the clever samples of the music, the imagery, and the way this all works with the show is great.

    5. "Sono Chi no Sadame" by Hiroaki "Tommy" Tominaga - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Ok, now I'm getting personal with this. I freaking love this show! All of the seasons, the characters are so great, the comedy works so well in it's bizarre (hehe) world. This is a manry anime, it's action, it's adventure, it's silly but awesome at the same time, it's shouting names and it's a bunch of fighting for what's right, it's god damn JOJO! (honestly was stuck between this and second OP, but this is the best in terms of corelation with the show itself.)

Second OP for those interested... www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFkPqh0z-_Y&feature=youtu.be&t=1s

    6. "What's Up People?!" by Maximum The Hormone - Death Note

Ah, my first anime that made me see just how vast the industry was, and also how disappointing it could be. Yes, Death Note was my proper introduction to Anime, sure by then I'd already seen all the Dragon Balls, and Naruto's around, but this one showed me just how serious a story they could make, tackling philosophy with great drama and crisp animation. Also this OP introduced me to Maximum The Hormone, I was 12, my mind was freaking blown, it was awesome. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGQAjAjsZNo

    7. "Toki Wo Kizamu Uta" by Lia - Clannad After Story

Yes, I'm a guy, yes I like the Clannad series, shut up! Okay, so for those who know, the first Clannad series was okay, a good Visual Novel adaptation without taking many risks, but when this season came along everything changed. And this OP introduced that change ever so subtely while keeping it well masked for the passerby. I won't spoil anything because, again, I think people have to experience this series for themselves. Unless you hate romance, if so, you have no heart.

    8. "Guren no Yumiya" by Linked Horizon - Attack on Titan

Get hyped!!! C'mon, if you were into anime when this series came out, you have to admit it caught your eye. No matter what you think of it now you have to admit you were into this OP. I remember just saying the first line of this song on some skype call with friends and they would start singing this without hesitating. Attack on Titan was everywhere, and this song along with it.

    9. "Crossing Field" by LiSA - Sword Art Online

I'm just gonna say it, I don't like SAO. I don't like Kirito, I don't like the way it went both in plot and character development, it got boring fast. But this OP! It's just so good, especially the song, it's got to be one of the best anime intro songs for me as a whole, and hey, even though I didn't like the show and only watched to keep up with people, this OP always put a smile on my face before watching an episode... UNTIL THEY FREAKIN' CHANGED IT! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg98e4twWmo

    10. "Howling" by Abingdon Boys School - Darker Than Black

My God I'm feeling so nostalgic now, remember this show? Remember this awesome intro? Remember how awesome everything was? Remember how they screwed it all up in Season 2? Yeah, again mistakes can happen, but still when you get something right, you have to appreciate it, and this is damn right. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw5LPFUlVYQ

i've got so many of these but ill spit out the ones at the top of my head bc i think abt anime ops a lot honestly

    1. "Hero's Come Back" by Nobodyknows+ - Naruto

Honestly, when this came out I was so pumped so amazed and naruto was on Jetix at 6pm and and it's so catchy you gotta just 3, 2 ,1 make some noise even if you are eleven and you look like a moron doing the naruto run across the playground

1.5 "Diver" by Nico touches the walls - Naruto

It's the same anime, diff op so 1.5! The visual is really nice and the stands really well on it's own, I especially love how clean it looks and how well animated it is. I adore the perspective they used as Naruto goes hurtling thru the air - defo give the full un-pitched version of this song a listen! And also the english cover by Morgan Berry is really nice!

    2. "Unravel" by TK From Ling Toiste Sigure - Tokyo Ghoul

this song esp. in full goes so hard I feel like it really set the bar for me for anime OPs this year! I'm never going to forget this one bc it's so solid and maybe it can help me forget the fucking trainwreck of an anime. Also, the only decent thing the second season produced was an acoustic version of this which is just as sick, and makes that last scene so much more powerful and heart-breaking (spoilers tho).

    3. "Out of Control" by Nothing's Carved In Stone - Psycho-Pass

CAUSE I FEEEEEEEEEEEEEL (maki please marry me) also nice visuals i really love the style

    4. "Borderland" by Mami Kawada - Jormungand

I remember just thinking this OP was so cool? It's pretty cool, Valmet was Really cool and Koko had a hot brother who was not at all friendly or a ghost.

    5. "Tougenkyou Alien" by serial TV drama - Gintama

I will remember their shitty grins until I die (or alternatively, until hijikata dies hmu okita for a collab) - gintama has so many iconic OPs its a shame to choose just one! Some Like it Hot by Spyair and DAYXDAY by BLUE ENCONT are some of my favourites but honestly, every single OP/ED is golden (or uh ... silver lined? idk)

    6. Every Bleach OP - Bleach

maybe, possible, just a little bit cheating but honestly, I feel one thing Bleach got so right was OPs. Of the big three (at the time) I feel like Bleach had the most style and set itself apart aesthetically. You can see this in some of Kubo's character designs and in my opinion, Pretty Good artwork for such a long-running manga that got continually better and stylised. I can't believe I had a crush on Ulquiorra Cifer.

    7. "Sakura Kiss" by Chieko Kawabe - Ouran High School Host Club

I'M SO WEAK FOR KISS KISS FALL IN LOVE plus the strings version is so good, heavenly i would absolutely have that played at every wedding, funeral and in between milestone of my life no questions asked.

    8. "Cagayake! Girls" by HTT - K-ON!

I don't know what's so magnetic about the K-ON opening. It's probably the nostalgia, kyoani's really dedicated animation of all the instruments that make it look so lifelike or maybe its just super catchy and cute and makes u feel GOOD. I'm always up for some NEVER ENDING GIRLS TALK.

    9. "heavenly blue" by Kalafina - Aldnoah.Zero

We all know that the soundtrack carried this anime. I do like the end scene a lot though, I like the phrase and the way it cuts in just as Asseylum points the gun towards the screen. The animation is pretty nice too. One day Urobutcher should actually write this anime properly and remake it and I'll be happy.

    10. "Ash Like Snow" by the brilliant green - Gundam 00

Gundam 00 was my first Gundam series and by far and wide my absolute favourite. The second opening is stunning both visually and the music is emotionally charged and I just love it to pieces for every small bit like Saji and Louise's little interaction in the middle that feels so them and natural and the strong, heavy guitars at the start with Setsuna falling towards Earth and showing off Exia's beautiful fluid animation and the Meisters in their everyday lives, the shot of the Gundams rising with the red GN particles behind them and the full moon in the backdrop is absolutely my fave and the last shot of the four trails of green GN particles and the Earth with it's massive solar ring are so good I feel it in my Heart.

I love the last line as well, which can translate to "I destroyed all the things I wanted to protect" and the sort of defeated or reminiscent way it's delivered? I think it's partly because i love the meisters so fucking much with All of my Soul that I will forever remember this OP and because the first season of Gundam 00 was so emotionally charged for me, I didn't skip a second and cried and screamed A Lot because I became really emotionally invested in all of them. i need to lay down

    11. "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" by Yoko Takahashi - u know

    The inevitable number one. Inevitable.

EX. special mentions - gud listening

    • "white ash" by CROWDS
    • "Black Rock Shooter" by Hatsune Miku
    • "Only My Railgun" by fripSide
    • "brave shine" by Aimer
