  1. Open call for character design/artist for original project.

Basically, I posted this in SCCSAV's Google group and if you aren't a member of SCCSAV, it's actually an open call for any character designer and/or artist for a project I'm working on.

It's actually a light web novel (a light novel published in the internet) and someday I'm hoping to publish it in the near future. All I can reveal is that the story's heavily influenced by Norse mythology in its backstory and its 'A' plot in some way or another.

Reply if you're interested. Post your gallery (most likely from DA or pixiv) and the country you're from. Would be grateful to be working together with any interested party. Thanks! :D

As SCCSAV's group content is visible only to group members, you may wish to copypaste the info you supplied in the thread here.

Once you do that, I'll try to promote this a bit.

@acostoss Okay, give me a sec.

    Original SCCSAV Discussion

    Reverse Vampire

Hey, it's my first discussion posted in SCCSAV. I was asking 2DT about finding anyone here who's good at drawing. I'm currently asking for anyone who can draw and design characters for an original project. Just post your gallery (if any, if not, link two or three pictures from other sites will do) and which country you are from. Would be grateful to be working together with any interested party. Thanks! :D

    Jesse Hamilton

If you'd like, feel free to post a similar thread to http://thecolorless.net (a forum I run with @Gargron), unless you wish for this to be SCCSAV-centric. Best of luck in your search!

    Aftershok

What kind of project is this? Animation, graphic novel/manga, etc? Are you looking for a couple of design sketches with line art or someone that will produce all the art for this project?

    Jeroz

    http://jeroz.deviantart.com/gallery haven't been updating often though~

    Reverse Vampire

At the moment I'm working at two projects simultaneously, but for now I'm asking for an artist for one of my projects. This one's a light web novel (light novel posted on the internet first), which I hope I can publish this someday, which I hope will happen in future.

    Reverse Vampire

Oh yeah, and I'm looking for someone that will produce all of the art for the project (mostly character designs). I'm no good at drawing.

Since I can't type fast enough on chat because of my burnt thumb I'll ask here, I might be interested in helping but only if it's a paid gig, I'm at that age where ah need monies for my art, all that time can't go towards nothing afterall XD

Here's my dA account if you're interested http://arq-11.deviantart.com and I'm from the UK.

@DSP Yeah I saw that. If only I can draw well with good drawing tutorials on the web. Most of them that surfaced on the search engine usually sucked.

Give me some time to consider.

@Reverse_Vampire Funny question but... do you prefer to draw them all by yourself if you were able to?

Because once I thought of doing something like this too but I couldn't find the right person. Then I ended up learning how to draw... Now I'm stuck on the 'learning how to draw' part.

Anyway second question, any example of a character in your story? Any character would be fine; just reveal as much as you want of the character so that anyone who's going to take the job knows a bit about your characterization.

  7. #130912012-02-15 13:23:30 *Reverse_Vampire said:

@eterno If I have the skills to draw well, I would prefer doing it by myself. You know, working with another person and share the credit is going to be problematic in later years (copyright issues, all that jazz).

If you want to know a bit more about my story...deep breathe (This is going to sound cliche, but it'll get better):

The main character's a housewife in her thirties (and yes, she's a mother of one). She has a personal wish (she doesn't want to tell anyone else about it. It would sound silly to their ears) to be a hero like the ones in the stories she read to her child during bedtimes. She opens a magic book and she goes to another world, which I said before, influenced by Norse mythology.

She's a bit naive and idealistic at first glance, but there are a lot of things that can't bring her down. When she enters the other world, she would be thinking: 'Oh I'm in a fairy tale-like world now. I'm a hero now? But I don't think the people would except me. You know, I'm a housewife and all. I did learned fencing when I was younger and...hey! Who's going to take care of my child back home?'

Actually, my story has lots and lots of characters. Expect to see around 50 characters that are of importance to the plot, as well as many subversion of the usual tropes you see in fantasy stories. (As in the usual 'You're a hero. Now go explore the world and save it and get the girl of your dreams.'

Yeah, it sounds crappy right now. Will this be enough?

  8. #131582012-02-16 00:14:52 *eterno said:

    @Reverse_Vampire

Yeah, that should be enough. There really isn't anything to worry about it being crappy or not, what's important is that you get the right person for it.

Reading through that, this is my opinion: You might not want to get people who can only draw anime style in this case because the characterization demands more detail than what anime style can do.

You might want to have people who have a really good grasp on the foundations for this one so that they would be able to actually show that 'She's a housewife in her 30's who is now in a fantasy world with skills in fencing' and believe me, This is extremely hard to do correctly especially if you've never experienced being a housewife before. I wouldn't worry much about you but I'm worried that you're gonna be having a hard time finding the right artist especially if you want them to do it for free because this is going to be a full-on project here and not just something you can do in your spare time if you want it done well.

My suggestion is to go to conceptart.org and look for artists there because you seriously require professionals here instead of hobbyists if you're hoping to get it published someday. If you're just doing this for a hobby, you still require professionals because otherwise it's not going to turn out well and if you paid them, you're gonna be wasting money on amateurs while professionals DO have reasonable prices these days (because there are lots of hungry artists lol).

To put it simply, you wouldn't want an art student for this one unless you've checked on the pros and you think that you don't need them, OK?

Oh and don't worry about copyrights and stuff like that unless you have everything all neat and written down because then, you can immediately copyright your script or whatever as your own. Generally, publishers don't like it when you do that though because they want to own your work anyway so there's that to consider.

Cleaned up your copypaste and made a site-wide announcement for you man. I hope you can find someone that meets your needs, and that you enjoy your stay on the site!

@ eterno: That was informational. There's still a lot of things for me to learn about the industry and there's so many things in my head right now that I would like to make serious considerations. I still like the illustrations to be anime-influenced, and I was hoping to be friends with the artist who's willing to help.

@ acostoss: Thanks for cleaning it up! I'm still new to this site and I hope that I can find someone who can help me. OTOH I may return to the drawing board if there's something that needs to be urgently fixed. Or I need to learn how to draw properly.

  11. #132152012-02-16 11:42:33eterno said:

@Reverse_Vampire No, no, I understand you want it to be anime-influenced. It's just that in this case, you would want someone with more experience beyond the anime style because the stylization is going to be really difficult.

That's why I recommend professional artists because they have more experience; And yes, there are professionals who do anime art so you can just look for those. But of course, they might not be interested in making friends so don't get your hopes up with that. Still though, if you have some money to spare, you might want to spend it on a pro first and see what he comes up with just for comparison's sake.

Either way, spend money on pros. I've seen petty deviantartists that can't even draw to save their lives charging $70 for a picture. Might as well get someone who was hired by a game company if you ask me.

I was considering it a bit but I'm not too sure, it depends just how much I'll be committing to this exactly. You said about 50 characters important to the story, that makes me consider backing out.

It's a light novel, so how many images are you thinking will be included in it, and with what level of detail? If it's not too much I may be interested.

For future reference though, here's my DA http://randomspazzu.deviantart.com/ and I live in Canada.

I think a collaboration between artists will be less taxing. Although one problem you're bound to run into will be style consistency.

Uh, well... can't offer much at the moment but here you go: http://halfcrazyme.deviantart.com/

I'm from Sweden, if you need some help with the Norse mythology, just ask. I would like to have more information on what we're suppose to draw. You mentioned that there is 50 characters who are important, and that seems like a lot of work to draw everyone of them. Also, I guess would only be interested if its a paid job.

I don't have a gallery to show, but I do have blog. Its however in Swedish, but its easy to navigate through it. http://unspection.blogspot.com/

A collaboration sounds good, style will need to the standarised. So maybe we can have a lead artist who sketches each page out with characters in positions and correct proportions, then the rest of us does the inking, background (and colour?) etc.

    Just what I thought...

EDIT: maybe you could ask Jin/DSP/other colourless artists to do an initial character design sketch if they have nothing else do... with no commitment to it at all.

@Reverse_Vampire Jin report for duty :3 Graphic design student and self-taught painter My style is mostly semi realistic and manga/anime (can do Cartoon style but it's not my main strength)

Recently have been rewarded with a DD, here's my deviant art account: link

I think my strongest point is I'm a perfectionist and I always measured my work to professional artists in the industry so I constantly trying to better myself. As DSP said, I'll take up on the job if it is a paid gig. Also my timetable is a little tight at the moment due to final year in University so I'll only able to take up the characters design job (to make up for that and FYI, I won't charge you a stupid amount of money, just a little something to justify the amount of time i spend on it really :P)

    @gargron Artist and Client not on hold because me isn't it ? ;_; i completely forgot that i was supposed to draw the little robot guy ;_;
