Double post to separate opinion as a person from duties as a moderator.

If at any point this thread becomes a breeding ground for ad-hominem attacks, I will lock it and ban the offenders for an appropriate length of time.

    Carry on.

I'll just say, that video is really well done. Even better?

It cost absolutely nothing to make.

Oh jeez guys. Alright, I went and watched the kickstarter video for Sarkeesian and also the video about Misandry. To start with the latter, I thought it was pretty funny and effective. It addressed an idea (misogyny) by relating it to it's converse (misandry). It's not looking to make fun of such social issues or even make any aggressive claims. The video mentions how common tropes are for men in video games with some humor spiced in.

Then I watch the video on the Sarkeesian page. I didn't see any man hate in the video, characterstic is stereotypical feminist ranting. I'd even say the video series has a place in the world, and could be valuable to society. It's not about pushing men down or raising women up, it's about addressing stereotypes and tropes. I didn't bother to watch her other videos, it is possible she does address it poorly. However, such is not the case on the kickstarter page.

Here is the major issue, that so many people have addressed. It doesn't take that much money to make a video. In the kickstarter, I could tell she had an HD cam, floods, chroma screens, and some video editting equipment. My job during the school year is to teach students how to video edit on a small scale, but we have professional equipment (thank you university funding). I'd expect maybe 6000 if you need to buy EVERYTHING you would need for an editting suite. That's a nice camera, new computer, lav mic, premium editting equipment, lots of floods, a couple different colored backdrops. A few foam pieces for selective removal and maybe a few props. Maybe then you can hit 6000. If the rest went to some kind of webhosting, then I could buy it.

But she just showed in that video that she has most all of that stuff. I'd expect maybe 1,000 in upgrades or for some shiny new toys, hosting costs if she has a site devoted to the stuff. The ammount of money she has right now though, that's way too much. Has she said where the spare money is going to? If it goes into her pocket, i'd be pissed.

The other thing about video editting is that it's a one time investment. Unless you start breaking shit, you pay for it once and move on. The rest is simply a time investment and some skill. I don't disagree with her making the video, just how much money she wants to do it.
