I hacked a secret database run by genius cats in order to learn their coordinates.

I then visited said location and cuddled with all of them.

Well, depends on what you mean by "hacker". Those that unlock videogames are technically "crackers".

Speaking of software and network security, which I assume you are, we can split it up more:

    • There are White Hats, the guys that work in the computer industry to keep things safe. These are your netsec and softsec guys, penetration testers, etc. They would be the "good" guys.
    • Black Hats are those that try to break into networks for personal gain. They are the "bad" guys. These are the guys you'll see portrayed in TV shows and movies.
    • Grey Hats break into the networks, though not for gain. It is mostly to test their skills or to make a point. They are more likely to be picked up by agencies and work as White Hats, if they are not arrested.

Now, there are other definitions. The term came to mean "programmer", someone who just "hacks away" at his keyboard all day. Then there are those that do hardware hacking. You also have the dying art of phreaking, social engineering, and a couple other fields that can be referred to as "hacking".

Hackers are cool. They have knowledge and they use it. Using knowledge is cool. You should all go and gain knowledge and use it, you'll be cool.

I used to hack but my academic life felt it so I stoped. Nothing bad in hacking by itself, it's just a tool like any other. What makes it good or bad are the people using it bla bla bla here I am seriously replying to a crap op again.

Hacking is just using a system the way the programmer did not intend thus opening files and data that can not be opened on a regular computer. So lets say you use windows. You turn on you computer and boot it with windows program. This will limit you to the data you can open. Now say you insert a Linux disc into the hard drive and boot it with that. You are not opening it with windows therefore you have just hacked the computer. You are now using it in a way the programmer ( windows) did not intend. To me it looks like you think all hackers are using their skills to steal credit card numbers and stuff or break into e harmony accounts which is total bull. Learn what a hacker is before making a scene.

I find hackers to be quite interesting actually. You should watch Bloody Monday ;) Sure there are some bad hackers but to be able to get through walls of security and access some top companies. That must really take some knowledge to be able to do that. I think it's quite cool actually.
